Dabei ordnet er die Malerei den anderen drei Elementen unter. Sie scheint für ihn zu hoch zu thronen, obwohl sie selbst von so vielen Förmlichkeiten unterworfen zu sein scheint; da ihr sobald Darsteller hinzukommen keinerlei Bedeutung zugesprochen wird. Somit kann man sagen, dass diese drei Faktoren, von denen Appia spricht, von ihm nicht als gleichwertig anzusehen sind. Die Beleuchtung erhält von ihm eine höhere Stellung als die Malerei, allein schon dadurch, dass es ihr möglich ist, den Raum zu erhellen. Somit hat sie eine sehr bedeutende Rolle inne, da gestalterisch mit ihr umgegangen werden kann. Das Licht ermöglicht das Wechseln von Bildern, um die Realität der Welt auf die Bühne zu projezieren. Außerdem ist die Beleuchtung, im Gegensatz zur Malerei nur wenigen Konventionen unterworfen. [...]
