I just couldn't put it down!

This is the first Lucado book I have read, but it won't be the last! From page one I loved this author. He has a wonderful way of making you know that God is interested in you. He shares wonderful stories in life that let you know there is a God who loves you. When I read this book I felt very loved by my Creator, and it's also helped me to see the little miracles in life that happen everyday. Everyone who doubts there is a God should get a copy of this book. I can't wait to dig into another one of Lucado's works! I really like the way he sees God, and I am beginning to see God the way I should, Finally!

This is the fifth copy of this book that I have purchased. I have given every copy to a friend. Max Lucado is my favorite author and these are three of his best books in one volume. Of course, all of his books are his best books. Pick any Lucado title. You will not be disappointed. He writes as if he were speaking only to you. "In the Grip of Grace" is one of my favorites, but every book I own of Lucado's is my favorite. He never disappoints. His tomes invite multiple readings and his clear style makes difficult truths easy to grasp. I just love his writing.

About the Author
Ricardo Tobon is a CG artist, an international lecturer and a University professor. He has worked in the visual arts and entertainment field in the United States and South America. His animated shorts have been shown in film festivals worldwide. Mr. Tobon was a key player in the founding of the online motion capture educational resource MocapClub.com , he currently serves as the Chair for this project. Ricardo holds a Master of Fine Arts from the Savannah College of Art and Design (SCAD). Mr. Tobon designed the Motion Capture course for the Computer Animation Program at Full Sail University where he currently lectures while he continues to work as an independent artist.

The Mocap Book review

The Mocap Book is a great tool for learning or brushing up on the motion capture process. In this book you will learn a practical work flow using Cortex, Motion Builder, and Maya to achieve your motion capture product. The Mocap Book uses a series of step by step tutorials that start from a simple object through a standard biped character capture. You will go through the capture process, clean up, and integration of the captured data. Then you can use your individual style and creativity to add layered animation on top of the base data to have a final animated piece. The best part of this book is that it does not have a cd or dvd included that can get lost or broken, all of the files needed are hosted on the mocapclub.com website. Enjoy adding to your cg knowledge with The Mocap Book.

The MoCap book provided me a great overview of the process of Motion Capture through a very step-by-step tutorial process. You get a good feeling of how the process of motion capture works, and feel accomplished when you have a moving character at the end of the book.

About the Author
Jonathan FitzGordon has been practicing yoga since 1995 and has been teaching since 2000 after receiving his certification from OM Yoga Center. He owned and operated the Yoga Center of Brooklyn until the fall of 2009. He is the creator of the FitzGordon Method Core Walking Program that has been featured in the New York Times and on Good Morning America. The Walking Program was born out of FitzGordon’s personal and professional experience with changing neuromuscular patterning through self-awareness and repetition. The program’s philosophy rests on the rock solid belief in our ability to change and evolve as we age.

expensive for what it is

I received this book, and the receipt was not included...I went online to see what I had paid. Over $16 for what is really a glorified printout from a website. While it had okay information, the print often refers to illustrations that don't exist, or the print instructs you to look at the red part of the illustration when all illustrations are in black and white. Additionally, much of the print is so tiny in the illustrations, you can't read them without magnification.

Most significantly, the photographs that go with the exercises are very, very dark and in places hard to see. The directions that accompany the photos are okay, but with small, very dark photos to follow, I am very disappointed.

It appears that the book was printed on April 12, 2013, in response to my order, which makes me think it is printed to order. So, perhaps mine was a copy that was very dark. Still, it speaks to quality control.

For something that is a printout/pamphlet, I am very disappointed at the quality and cost.

Best advice the author offers at the end of the book is to "drink water." No kidding. Be aware that the few poses that were offered were not exercises but yoga moves. They are not designed for people experiencing pain and stiffness.

I just received this book a few days ago. After doing a few of the exercises and learning and applying a few of the basic concepts, I am already on my way to solving my piriformus problem with a program that makes sense, and this appears to be better than anything else I have tried to solve this problem. Easy to read book with clear instructions for exercises.

Creepy and Great!

Wow. Let me just say I was not expecting this when I started Shift. Honestly I only read it because my reading pile was empty. But once I started it, I was hooked.

Olive was popular, beautiful, fun, and bubbly, but when her dad left because of her suicide attempt, it all spiraled downhill. Suddenly Olive has a new life and is shunned, teased, and bullied by everyone including her ex-best friend, popular girl Katie. Only Ami sticks with her...but htere's something about her that's different. Something Olive never expected...
Newbie Miranda Vaile comes to town, niece of crazy Loony Oona and she's fresh meat for the vultures of high school. Yet somehow, she pushes everyone away and becomes Katie's best friend and confidant...but something creepy is happening because just as Miranda's looking more and more like Katie every day, Katie's becoming paler, sicker, and tired by the minute. Everyone isn't noticing it though, and soon enough Olive starts to doubt just what is real. Becuase, when you're going crazy yourself, who's to know what's real and what's not? Even when you know what's going on.

Em Bailey masterfully blurs the line between reality and imagination. I swear, there was not one time I was sure if what Olive saw and discovered was real or not! Em wrote beautifully, the prose leaning into paranormal then falling back into reality. The creep factor is high and I think that if anyone read this entirely at night...you'd definitely dream about it. Maybe not bad enough for a nightmare, but it will definitely leave an impression on its reader.

Olive was a great protagonist. Because of her problems, you, like I said, could never tell what was reality and what was her mind. I mean, Miranda would mouth words that Katie had said mere seconds later, act like Katie, dress like Katie, and slowly start to look like her. And even htough Olive suspected Miranda to be a shapeshifter, I couldn't be sure. Especially with what Miranda makes Olive realise. What was mind-blowing, though, was the fact that the most obvious things were the things that surprised me the most. When there was a twist, I would think "what? That's not possible!" But the more I thought about it, the more I realised how many hints were pointing at it.

There was romance! I know! I wasn't expecting it, but when the romance came I was pleasantly surprised! THe love interest was sweet and understanding and this was one romance where I loved the guy being kind and not mischevious and bad. The apocalypse is coming, isn't it? But yeah. Lachlan was just ADORABLE and I loved him!

Olive has been hospitalized for an unnamed mental illness, and now she has returned to school. She takes her meds, goes to class, tries to stay out of trouble. She spends a lot of time with her friend Ami. One day a new girl shows up at school, and there's something strange about her. Olive decides Miranda (the new girl) is a shape-shifter who basically sucks the personality and life out of a person. Miranda begins following Katie, the most popular girl, and soon Katie becomes really sick while Miranda takes Katie's boyfriend, Katie's followers, and eventually Katie's life. But no one believes Olive. They just adjust her meds and tell her to face her fears. Then Miranda turns her attention to Olive, and soon Olive feels the life draining out of her...

That description makes this book sound more interesting than it was. It was okay at the beginning, even with the creepy shape-shifting thing going on. About halfway through the book we discover that Ami is just a figment of Olive's imagination. Then Katie dies, and Miranda sics herself onto Olive. At that point I quit caring about what happened in this story. The thriller part of it wasn't thrilling enough, and the contemporary "chick lit" part of it wasn't realistic enough. It was just a weird mishmash of genres and it didn't really work for me.

This book might work for readers who like both thrillers and contemporary fiction, or fans of chick lit who want to break out of their typical genre. It does discuss mental illness, but doesn't give enough descriptions or information to be truly helpful.

When I was at the library, I was mostly looking for 2012 YA releases that I had missed but something about this book called to me even though I don't remember much buzz about it. Something about the concept just seemed so creepy and, although different from my usual reading fare, compelling.

When mousy Miranda Vaile arrives at Olive's school, everyone knows two things about her. 1. She's an orphan and 2. because she killed her parents. Yet as weeks pass, Olive notices that plain Miranda is looking like more while popular Katie is looking less. Research suggests to Olive that Miranda might be a shapeshifter but after "the incident," who would believe what Olive says?

Doesn't that sound deliciously creepy? The idea of shapeshifters is a fascinating one to me although I don't feel like it's one that is explored much in YA literature. Plus Olive's unreliability leaves you wondering if Miranda is a shapeshifter or if Olive just needs her medication adjusted.

The beginning of the book certainly lived up to that promise but the ending left me very disappointed. I don't want to give any specific spoilers but I wanted a big blow-up and instead the ending was more lukewarm with dangling threads. It is this dissatisfaction which led to my rating. Actually the whole of part two was pretty disappointing to me.

But part one had some interesting threads. Olive used to be Katie's best friend but she has since been relegated to the social outskirts. Her attempts to forge a new life, to find her real self are interesting especially how some of the points (like her love for the band Luxe) come into play in part two. Beyond Olive, there is her new best friend Ami, who I really liked, newish cute boy Lachlan (not sure about that name), and Olive's cute little brother Toby (I am a sucker for younger brothers lately it seems).

Overall: I found the ending of this book so opposite what I wanted that I find it coloring my entire reading experience into a negative one. I do not recommend this book.

Webtutorials in book form

In regards to chapter 1 about what Augmented reality is, the authors, as many others confuse mixed and augmented reality.
While the book focuses on Qualcomm, they should at least mention Metaio, ARToolkit and other readily available commercial and free AR SDKs for mobile devices.

The first half of the book is more or less the tutorials offered by Qualcomm on their webpage ([...] in book form and second half of the book is a unity tutorial. Step-by-step. This book may be fine for hobbyists, but any developers should stay clear. I would rather read the web-tutorials by Metaio or Qualcomm, and get a good book on unity.

One might expect that ch 5 - Advanced Augmented Reality would cover at least something about marker to marker interaction, it does not.

I expected more focus on Game Design for this particular media! I found only Vuforia tutorials...

This book is of course a good operation, the topic is of course interesting! But I agree with other reviews that it suddenly focuses only on the Qualcomm's half of the sky... and it does it reselling the Vuforia's hello world tutorials in form of book... I've often chosen books of this kind because they promised to guide you through the creation of a complex project that often was shown on the cover, suddenly the custom project at the end is really unsexy... (e.g. I'm sure that a detailed version of the angel on the cover or any other static HD model, rendered realtime with AO and stuff, sitting statically on a marker would have been a better AR UX experience and would have shown a lot more about the potential of Unity and AR... )
The custom project at the end could have been a lot better with the advise/supervision of a real game designer. Suddenly it turns to be a really bad example of game design! The book is supposed to be about Games! Gaming UX and graphics standards are really high! Kids are already playing with many AR games for nintendo and PSVITA that have great graphics and UX... Unity quality standards for non AR Games are SO high that I expect from a book about Games, AR and Unity to be (at least) aware of these standards.

A good AR book for new developers

After reading the book I can strongly recommend this book to anyone who is planning to make an AR and I strongly recommend to those whose first time it is with making an AR game for the mobile market. The book helps first time users extremely well, by taking the time and discussing some of the basic of Unity as well as nicely designed diagrams which will help the player. With the fact that the book helps explain all of this incredibly well, I feel that readers will learn a lot about AR and using it with Unity.

My favourite section of the book is when they explain what makes a good marker. This section was incredible as it took me and my team a while to figure out what picture gave us 5 stars and how we could improve it. With the help of the book developers should be able to create their own 5 star marker in NO time! I read this part twice just to make sure nothing got past me.

Other area I am happy they addressed was that the reason why there are not many AR games. Which is because publishers/developers don't see a profit in this market so many of them won't take the risk. I agree that AR games can be new and exciting instead of a tech demo, this then leads to teaching the reader how to make an AR wack-a-mole which is pretty cool.

Two things I would of liked to of seen in the game would of been looking at the other plugin for AR I know it was mentioned briefly but just a bit more detail on why use Vuforia (I know that it is the best free choice out there) but just say why. Second point just to talk about some of the AR games out their already and discuss about the theory maybe and how us as developers can learn from their pros and cons.

Overall guys I strongly recommend this book to people who are interested in creating an AR game for the mobile. If you have never made an AR game for mobile then this is a MUST buy! Its not a long book but what you can learn from this book is amazing!

Loved It But Can't Wait for Book 3..I Need More Jonas

So the book was released today and I couldn't wait to dig in. It took me three hours and it was sooooooooo good I can't wait for book 3. It was a little different than the first one and different than what I expected.

Book 1, The Club, you must read first, it details Jonas and Sarah's meeting and falling in love and essentially in book one he gets her to jump off a cliff and give him 100% trust. In book 2, this book they arrive home from that trip in love but no one's said the actual words though they believe they both love each other. To find that Sarah's employers knows she broke the rules and broke into, trashed and stole her Kat's computers.

Jonas flies off the handle and calls Josh to come help him save his Sarah. And while a majority of this book is Jonah trying to protect Sarah from the bad guys he also has to try and figure out how to save Sarah from essentially her boox whose hidden by the internet. Sarah also wants those words and Jonas realises he has to let her in and thats a struggle for them.

Jonas is a crazy man and I like Sarah love that about him. He is such a fun character. This book also has more Kat, Sarah's BFF and she is super fun too, Josh is also around more and really has no clue how to help his brother, but it was great seeing more of him. I hope the author does a series of books about Kat and Josh.

Sarah puts up with Jonas and she knows him so well and well thats what makes their relationship so fun. He screws up but essentially she understan him so much. I think my favorite line is when she tells Jonas, that essentially nothing he could say to her about how broken he is would turn her off him.

The book was a lot of fun and most of it was very fun. The end was OMG and well I can't wait for book 3.

This book is a reread!!!!

I adore this woman! She did it again and i'm sure she will do it over and over again with every new book she writes in her bright future!

The second part of The Club is a little slower that the first one.
How? Well, slower in a way that this part is introducing us with a series of events which started in the book one and that will end in the book three.
But that doesn't mean that book two was less good.
Oh no, this book was hot hot hot!
I will mention a couple thing which you’ll remember when you start reading; bar scene (OMG), bed + rope= panties melting ;) and of course, red wine.
My God, I wish I could hide somewhere and watch all of you while reading this, seriously!

I laughed, I screamed, I was pissed, I was happy, I was everything while reading this and I would and will do it all over again, cause this book is a reread!

I LOVE you Lauren and I can’t thank God enough that he gave you that brilliant mind of yours!

I am so hooked on this series! Loving it!

This love affair has changed our characters. Jonas and Sarah have reached a level of understanding few achieve in a lifetime.

The trip to Belize was everything Jonas hoped for. Sarah is now his completely and trust is finally part of their relationship.

Protecting her from the owners of the Club is not going to be easy. Sarah refuses to believe she is really in danger and Jonas is losing his mind trying to convince without scaring her half to death.

There is such complexity in Jonas' character. Little by little we begin to understand him and the traumas (plural!) he experienced that shaped him into the man he is today. It is interesting to note his relationship with Josh, his twin. You immediately feel how protective Josh is of Jonas. He goes out of his way to make Jonas feel secure in the knowledge that he has his back. Whatever Jonas needs from him, he is willing to provide in order to make Jonas feel in control. The traumas experienced by Jonas are shared by Josh, even though he was not there when their mother was killed. Whether it is the "twin connection" or just the fact these brothers were always very close, Josh is the one that always is there to protect Jonas from spiraling out of control.

The end of this book is a cliffhanger. It is heart stopping, but be assured - book 3 is to publish shortly so do not fear. We will get to find out what happens and won't have to hold on for months.

Get Your Core Design Principles Here

If you are a solo indie designer/developer I strongly recommend reading this book. The author, in my opinion, has done the best job in explaining the foundational principles of game design. I have read several game design books over the past 3 years to learn how to design games, and then to development. Granted it has been a part-time effort as I work full-time, but I wish I had read this book first. The others I have read seem to be geared to serious game design students in a formal course of study; or new game designers working in a AAA studio. I learned some,but had to filter a lot of the material as it didn't seem to fit the solo, indie designer/developer. Ernest Adams shoves that approach aside and gets down to the very basics all game designers need to understand, regardless of genre or style of work. He presents the material in a clear and understandable prose with examples from all genres to demonstrate their universality. After reading this book I would also highly recommend reading Ernest Adams other book Game Mechanics (see my review).

The beginning and the end of game design books

Written by the man who founded the IGDA, this is the best starting point to understanding video game design. Written like a true textbook I found the information to be very relevant, concise and well organized. The assignments and questions at the end of each chapter are designed with real world situations in mind. It is rare that we game designers ever get to build for ourselves. More often we are working for development companies and the exercises have this in mind. I hope they update this sooner rather than later as the information does not have much about motion capture or the new motion interfaces but hopefully they will include more in the next edition. Awesome resource that I recommend for beginners to intermediate.

Greatest resource for game design I've found.

Adams is a terrific author - he provides simple, clear guidelines for Game Design. I had a question about the book and emailed him and he got right back to me very quickly! Awesome.

I just can't say enough about this book. Buy it and read it is all I can say - if you're serious about game design you will find what you need in this book.
