About the Author
Italian jazz musician Max De Aloe is one of the most active chromatic harmonica players in Europe. He has ten albums released under his own name and is on a dozen other records besides. He has his own music school in Milan and teaches as well as performs on the chromatic harmonica.

Serious and comprehensive

If you want to play chromatic harmonica seriously, this is the book you want. It doesn't have you playing Old MacDonald Had a Farm. Starts out focusing on tone production, technique.
If you want to play like Toots Thielemans or Gregoire Maret, this would be a great book to use, especially if you have a little bit of musical understanding behind you. I'm an intermediate player, who's grasp of theory out-paces my technique on this instrument because I started with piano. This book was exactly what I needed until I can find a good teacher of chromatic harmonica (which are rare).

First, some resources to help you...the website MASTERSOFHARMONICA.COM offers free videos and articles on harmonicas, and the book LOVE OF CHROMATIC HARMONICA...TECHNIQUES AND ADVICE FROM THE WORLD'S BEST! is a 678 book all players should own, with 130 pages on method, 340 pages of interviews, and harmonicas reviews and customizations.
Max's book is smaller, but very well done, and a great aid to building your skills playing and reading music.
This is a translation from Italian to English, but it’s so well done, you’d never know it was translated, which I cannot say about many such books. It has a spiral binding, so stays open for easy reading, and the cover and back cover have a laminate finish so yogurt and liquids won’t damage either. I always seem to play at the kitchen table, do you do this too?
What you’ll find is an excellent progression of easy to grasp text, technical exercises for the chromatic harmonica, and my favorite in the package by far…the wonderful and I mean wonderful recordings you can play along with/ all at many different skill levels from beginner to expert.
Now like the Mel Bay play along books, the CD with accompanies this book provides two recordings of each piece offered: the first is the recording of the piece with Max playing the chromatic harmonica solo. You can read along in the book, and then play along.
The second recording is the wonderful backup band, with no soloist, so you can play with them your own way.
This particular type of recording mix has many wonderful opportunities and benefits for you as a musician:
A) Your first time through, just play along with Max and the band on track 1.
B) When you get a little more familiar with the piece, you can play accompaniment, putting in notes you think work with track 1.
C) Then move to track 2, where there is no soloist, and you play the solo all by yourself, reading the music assuming you read music.
D) But my most favorite….and this is only satisfying when the recording is of a wonderful band, play an improvisation on top of track 2.
E) Then your final goal is to actual create another melody which goes along with the chord changes on track 2.
All told, you have many wonderful combinations available to you, all of which will make meaningful contributions to your playing.
I usually get many days of practice from just one of the CD track groupings, and learn a lot from every one.
Another thing I really like about this book is: I have a lot of method books, but many provide exercises based solely on chord theory, or were written for trumpet or saxophone or piano.
Max’s book offers progressive technical advice applicable specifically to the chromatic harmonica….this means the exercises are tied directly to some technical skill he wants you to learn about…such as using the slide to go from a draw B to a draw C with slide in, or perhaps learning to go from a blow note to a draw on another hole quickly. The exercises are not generic to any instrument, they are tailored to the chromatic harmonica and the specific technical challenges it presents, and it will spoil you.
Overall, this book is one of the finest chromatic harmonica method books I’ve seen.

An outstanding Resource to systematically approach playing the Chromatic Harmonica

For those of us stateside, there is an appalling lack of information about playing the harmonica in a systematic and comprehensive way. Max De Aloe's method provides this information in a focused and professional manner. This method is not for the non-serious: Max emphasizes tone and intonation right from the get go. I quickly learned that I had to make micro adjustments to my lip position to optimize tone and intonation for each note. The exercises are challenging and require a certain level of mastery before the player moves on to the next. The play along tunes are musical, and require good listening and practice skills to master and play with freedom and accuracy.
Chromatic harmonica apparently is big in Europe; it isn't here. The instrument is incredibly demanding and challenging to play. That's why most of the guys that play with freedom are in their 60s and beyond. As Max and Toots admonish: "Anyone that wants to play the chromatic harmonica well has to practice at least one hour a day, weekends and holidays including." As Mr. Suzuki said," You only don't have to practice when you don't have to eat. "
