Entertaining but a Little Trite and Overblown

I read one of Vince Flynn’s books a few years ago. I can’t even recall which one (maybe that says something about how I feel about Vince Flynn) but I liked it enough that I bought Separation of Powers. I keep an inventory of unread books on a shelf in my bedroom and the inventory floats between ten and twenty books. I have no standard on how I select the next book to read out of my inventory other than I tend to bounce between fiction and non-fiction (usually something history based). Maybe it speaks to my mediocre level of interest in this book that it sat in my inventory for at least a couple of years with several books jumping over it to be read. I finally got to a place where I thought I would knock this book out and once deep into the book the decision to pass it over clarified. Vince Flynn is a fine writer and is very readable. His hero, super spy/assassin Mitch Rapp, is compelling and, like many similar characters eminently capable and tough. The general plot outline of the book is entertaining enough and there are a couple of solid action scenes that are well written and help make the rest of the book worth slogging through. I must confess that I did something with this book that I never do: I skimmed through many pages. Flynn has a tendency to write extensive backstories for every character and I soon found them tedious and, in some cases, a little obvious. At other times Flynn expounds on the political motivations of characters, groups or countries and those sections read like a junior high level current affairs text. I’m not a political thriller nut so maybe I’m just not wired to jazz to this type of book. I’m sure if you are passionate about political thrillers then this novel will be right up your alley. But this book doesn’t really transcend that genre and if you are looking for more than a meat and potatoes political thriller then you will be disappointed.
