Tossed togather quickie.
By Terence M. Hines
This paperback was published less than a month after the Heaven's Gate mass suicide in March, 1997. It is a tossed-togather quickie "written" by the staff of the New York Post. In typical Post sensationalistic style, it covers the history of the cult and the mass suicide. As such it records useful information, but I'm amazed that no full length scholarly work has yet appeared on the Heaven' Gate episode.
Interestingly, I was in graduate school in Eugene, OR in 1975 when "Bo" and "Peep", the future Heaven's Gate leaders, came through town. I recall seeing ads for their presentation but, for lack of time, didn't go. Wish I had as I have a strong interest in why people believe in the type of pseudoscientific and paranormal crap Bo and Peep used to later lead dozens to their deaths.
But back to the book. It was clearly a rush job and abounds in errors and inconsistencies. On page 11 Hollywood is described as a place where stars "grinded" out films. GRINDED? The last time I checked, ther past tense of the verb "to grind" was "ground". On page 124 a "local" radio station in the area is described as receiving calls from "around the country". Still, what can one expect from New York Post writers? This is probably the best they could do.
In summary, this book does provide the basic details of the events of the Heaven's Gate cult suicide, and for that it has some value.

Heaven's Gate Cult
By S. Wilkinson
This was hard book to read as I had a friend that was a member. She died in 1997 with the group. How people can follow a man as crazy as he was, is beyond me. The book didn't go deep enough into why the people believed as they did. How could anyone think he could lead them to Heaven? The book started off good, but fell short of details. Wish there had been more details about each of the people that died.

HEAVEN'S GATE: CULT SUICIDE IN SAN DIEGO, by the Staff of the New York Post
By Robert Dean O'connor
I agree with another of the reviewers here that this book is poorly executed and shabby in its composition. It doesn't take long to understand that this work was written by several people, cobbled together in spare moments - a kind of hand-me-round job. You can see this dramatically in the third part of the book, when one chapter begins the tone and style are totally different from the previous ones. It's almost like two discrete books. What is worrying, for me, is the illiteracy, the repetitiveness of the writing, the dull, aching text patched together like old clothes, as if the authors were trying to get it to the press in record time, regardless of the finished product. I have read better school essays, and that's saying something today. I have read more interesting grocery lists. In fact, this book makes the telephone directory a work of pure literature, such as would make Shakespeare green with envy. I had to give it one star, because the system won't go any lower. But frankly, I would give this a miss - a wide berth - unless you are in prison or in an institution, banging your head against the walls with absolutely nothing else to do.
