Both Flesh and Not: Essays, by David Foster Wallace

Brilliant, dazzling, never-before-collected nonfiction writings by "one of America's most daring and talented writers." (Los Angeles Times Book Review).

Both Flesh and Not gathers fifteen of Wallace's seminal essays, all published in book form for the first time.

Never has Wallace's seemingly endless curiosity been more evident than in this compilation of work spanning nearly 20 years of writing. Here, Wallace turns his critical eye with equal enthusiasm toward Roger Federer and Jorge Luis Borges; Terminator 2 and The Best of the Prose Poem; the nature of being a fiction writer and the quandary of defining the essay; the best underappreciated novels and the English language's most irksome misused words; and much more.

Both Flesh and Not restores Wallace's essays as originally written, and it includes a selection from his personal vocabulary list, an assembly of unusual words and definitions.

From Booklist
This posthumous volume, appearing in the wake of D. T. Max’s much-discussed biography of Wallace, Every Love Story Is a Ghost Story (2012), gathers 15 previously uncollected essays. Six are book reviews, 3 discuss the contemporary state or art of writing, 2 address tennis, and 1 is about Terminator 2. The remainder cover a range of Wallace’s wide-eyed, “isn’t it weird we take things like ad space at the U.S. Open for granted” subjects and scarily astute criticism. Published originally between 1988 and 2007, these essays demonstrate Wallace’s interdisciplinary approach to both pop culture and abstruse academic discourse. For instance, his formal training in symbolic logic informs his opinion of two, in-his-opinion awful, math novels, Philibert Schogt’s The Wild Numbers (2000) and Apostolos Doxiadis’ Uncle Petros and Goldbach’s Conjecture (2000), while his familiarity with the actual life and cranium-crunching philosophy of Ludwig Wittgenstein lends perspective to his appreciation of David Markson’s Wittgenstein’s Mistress (1988). For Wallace devotees, these essays are required reading. For everyone else, they’re sometimes tough to get into but entirely worth the exertion. --Diego Báez

From Bookforum
Both Flesh and Not is David Foster Wallace at his best and his worst, but the thing about Wallace’s best was that it usually contained his worst... If he’s not going to court the reader, he’s going to hold him in contempt. And you’re going to listen to him because his is the most colossal intelligence in the room. —Gideon Lewis-Kraus

Review
"Scarily astute. . . . Published originally between 1988 and 2007, these essays demonstrate Wallace's interdisciplinary approach to both pop culture and abstruse academic discourse...For Wallace devotees, these essays are required reading."--Booklist

"A collection spanning 20 years of Wallace's nonfiction writing on subjects as wide-ranging as math, Borges, democracy, the U.S. Open, and the entire spectrum of human experience in between...Both Flesh and Not is excellent in its entirety and just as quietly, unflinchingly soul-stirring."--Maria Popova, Atlantic

"At their best these essays remind us of Wallace's arsenal of talents: his restless, heat-seeking reportorial eye; his ability to convey the physical or emotional truth of things with a couple of flicks of the wrist; his capacity to make leaps, from the mundane to the metaphysical, with breathtaking velocity and ardor."--Michiko Kakutani, New York Times

"David Foster Wallace left the essay form in a different state than it was in before he wrote. He wrote of Federer that he had 'exposed the limits, and possibilities, of' his sport. Wallace himself, with mystery and metaphysics galore, did no less for the essay."--Michael Robbins, Chicago Tribune Printers Row

"If you like essays, vocabulary lists (blepharitis! gastine!), footnotes (so many footnotes), and/or DFW, you need this."--Largehearted Boy

"One of the best writers of our time....If you've never read David Foster Wallace before, his masterful study of Roger Federer, included in this anthology, is an ideal place to start."--Steph Opitz, Marie Claire

"Like previous collections of David Foster Wallace's essays, Both Flesh and Not displays the late author's vast intellectual curiosity....showcase[s] Wallace's ever-evolving, intimate, and often humorous relationship with language."--The New Yorker Page-Turner

"David Foster Wallace's essays show a man struggling to figure out the complexities of discernment and judgment....It isn't merely wonderful writing. It is a model of adult citizenship....In Both Flesh and Not, he is at the top of his game."--David Masciotra, The Daily Beast

"The best passages are those that celebrate words and the author's relationship with them....It is a treasure trove for those who love the complexities of language."--Josh Davis, Time Out

"I doubt there's a single person reading this paper who needs me to explain why they should be excited about a new collection of previously uncollected David Foster Wallace essays. His nonfiction is born out of the sort of bitingly perceptive but deeply compassionate humanity our world needs more of, and we should savor every last bit of it he left us."--Rian Johnson, writer and director of "Brick" and "Looper"

"Every one of these pieces, even the tiniest introduction to a collection of prose poems, hums with Wallace's contrary energy....They show a mind at work, and it was one of the best this country has seen."-John Freeman, Boston Sunday Globe

worth reading for fans of David Foster Wallace
By Neurasthenic
It is no surprise that the estate of David Foster Wallace has brought this collection to market; his cult has only grown since his death, and his essays were published in so diverse a set of publications during his lifetime that it's unlikely that any but the most fanatical readers saw a large fraction of them. The pieces here appeared originally in The New York Times, The Review of Contemporary Fiction, Spin Magazine, Tennis Magazine, Might Magazine, Waterstone's Magazine, Fiction Writer, Salon.com, Science, Rain Taxi, The Atlantic, The New York Times Book Review, and as portions of the Oxford American Writer's Thesaurus and The Best American Essays 2007. The range of topics is not quite so wide, and covers ground familiar to readers of DFW's previous work -- fiction, tennis, Wittgenstein, movies and math.

The collection is clearly the spiritual sibling of A Supposedly Fun Thing I'll Never Do Again and Consider the Lobster, and comparing these seems appropriate. A Supposedly Fun Thing I'll Never Do Again (hereinafter, "ASFT") is an irregular collection -- the highest points, including the title essay, are superb, but the low points are utterly forgettable. As a result, I typically suggest that newcomers to DFW's essays start with Consider the Lobster; though it contains nothing as wonderful as the Illinois State Fair or Cruise Ship essays in ASFT, it's more consistently impressive.

This collection, Both Flesh and Not, more closely resembles ASFT. It may be that the editors had little control over this; DFW is dead and a finite number of his essays wait to be collected. Here we get two tennis essays (one of which purports to be about the economics of tennis, but it's still a tennis essay), neither of which is as good as the tennis essay in ASFT, which was in turn not one of the stronger pieces in that collection. These might be read as similar in some regards to DFW's wonderful travel writing, where in this case he was traveling to the U.S. Open tennis tournament, but unlike those pieces, we here get a relatively narrow picture of DFW himself, robbed of the neurosis that gives those pieces their soul.

Both Flesh and Not also contains a couple of ruminations on the state of contemporary fiction and book reviews, none of which will alter my reading of such books in the slightest. And even when DFW gives an over-the-top positive review to the book "Wittgenstein's Mistress," his reasoning is so opaque to me (and probably any non-fan of Wittgenstein), that despite my immense respect for DFW, I'm never going to read the book. The essay on Terminator 2 seemed to make only trivial observations about the role of big money in cinema.

So, what here was good? I liked the essay "Rhetoric and the Math Melodrama" from Science magazine. It was a funny and smart discussion of the brief trend in "brilliant mathematician" movies and books that were popular at the time. The essay will reward multiple readings. The notes from the Oxford American Writer's Thesaurus will please the many readers who also liked DFW's "Snoot" essay (reprinted in Consider the Lobster). I similarly liked his deconstruction of prose poems.

One piece, "Back in the New Fire," has not aged well, and seems more dated than anything else by DFW I can recall reading. The piece argues that the advent of AIDS might cause young Americans to embrace a more conservative sexual morality than had seemed to become the norm in the late 1960s and 1970s, and that they might ultimately view this as a blessing. Writing in The New York Times, Michiko Kakutani called this essay "thoroughly offensive," which seems too strong a reaction to me. It's an odd piece but one would have to almost deliberately misread it to think that DFW was calling for the death of gays, or whatever Michiko thought was going on.

DFW so consistently proved himself a brilliant writer that I find myself holding him to a high standard. I don't think this is unfair; he held himself to a high standard as well. This collection does not contain his best work and should probably not be anybody's introduction to DFW, but it is totally worth reading.

One point about the form of this collection rather than the content. The date of original publication of each piece appears at that piece's end, and the book or magazine in which each piece appeared is listed in an appendix. This information should all be on the first page of each essay.

Kind of disappointing, doesn't merit a new book
By Pearlie2454
It's difficult not to get the idea that Little Brown didn't just piece together the remaining odds and ends by Wallace to capitalize further on the current David Foster Wallace industry. Wallace himself probably would not have wanted to include some of these pieces in a book of essays. It is not as if these are grand, unfinished, posthumous projects, non-fiction equivalents to the Pale King-this is a selection of published material from throughout his career, and he would have had plenty of opportunities to include them in a collection if he had wanted to. Including a two-page "direly under appreciated novels >1960" as a solo essay seemed particularly silly. It's hard to call anything written by David Foster Wallace fluff, but this collection doesn't represent his best work.

Nevertheless, there are certainly people who will want this book and they are bound to be a pretty self-selecting group. There are a few very good essays in this collection-the Federer essay and the review of the novel Wittgenstein's Mistress come to mind (though this review is available in full online and in any copy of the novel). And if you want to hear him discuss tennis yet again there's an essay about the US Open. As a complete essay collection, however, Both Flesh and Not comes nowhere near the breadth of Consider the Lobster or A Supposedly Fun Thing I'll Never Do Again.

Still quite good, but you can definitely see some of his less friendly insecurities start to shine through in some of them
By jafrank
In some ways, publishing this wasn't fair. Wallace's other non-fiction collections were meticulously curated and show him working at a delirious, fevered intellectual pitch; they also tended to be pieces he had written over the course of a few years in the early 90's or early 2000's. The real problem with Both Flesh and Not is that it extends that chronology all the way back to the 1980's through 2007 with work that, while engaging and funny and often quite insightful, often lacks the really flooring brilliance of his best non-fiction.

In fact several of the pieces in here, especially his literary reviews, come across as the work of a jealously insecure, though deeply erudite mind. It's not enough that he gushes about his love of Wittgenstein's Mistress (which really is phenomenally well done) he also has to write an eye-glazingly protracted piece that makes every conceivable effort to remind you of how thorough and total his own grasp of Wittgenstein/Analytic philosophy is (as though we ever doubted, or even cared). And in a review of 2 thoroughly unimpressive novels about mathematics, he seems interested not only in making it crystal clear that he is a more thoughtful novelist than either of the 2 aforementioned writers, but that he in fact has a much deeper and more profound understanding of higher mathematics than either of them either. In short, Wallace seems to become weirdly passive-aggressive whenever any novelist dares raise their head to write a book about any sort of idea or theme that he himself is personally interested in.

And yet, there are pieces in here that are really gorgeously alive, in particular his essays about Tennis, which are so full of passion and delightful descriptions of Roger Federer, Andre Aggasi, Pete Sampras, et al. in action that they actually made me care about an organized, competitive athletic activity for probably the first time in my life.

However, the later pieces here are hard to read. Not because they recall his impending demise, but simply because they are so heavily rooted in and dependent upon the cultural climate of the late Bush years ("I'm the decider." "Mission Accomplished"… remember when that stuff was in the news)? And the simple fact is that as brilliant and as wide-ranging and as endlessly erudite as David Foster Wallace was, the America of 2014 is by many orders of magnitude more fraught with white noise and anxiety and vast economic woe than even he probably would have imagined if he was still around today. Wallace at his best was a deeply insightful writer and thinker, but 6 years after his death, I think we've already left him behind in the Big American Dread department.

To use a silly pop-music metaphor, Both Flesh and Not is more like a reissue of some huge band's rarities and b-sides rather than a collection of their greatest hits. If you already love Wallace's other books, you will likely love some (though maybe not all) of these essays. If you've never read him or just never made it around to his non-fiction before, this probably isn't the best or strongest place to start from. You'd probably be better served by starting with "Consider the Lobster," or "A Supposedly Fun Thing I'll never do Again"

The best IPL book by far
By Charles TANKBOY Knight
My wife and I have been working with Lasers and IPL technologies for the last ten years. And in that time we have read a few books on the subject, most of which ramble on way too much or have very slanted views towards a particular technology.

Well - this book rocked my world!

When it first arrived in the post I was a bit taken back by how thin it was. Its a real light weight in comparison to most books on the subject and my first thoughts were that I had probably just waisted my money. But no, this turned out to be the most useful book on IPL I have ever read.

Firstly the writers stick to the point and don't ramble on. The layout of information allows your mind to absorb it in a logical fashion so the information retains in your mind without having to read it two or three times.

The photos are relevant to the information presented around them but the most useful thing about this book, that sets it above all the rest was the use of Results Tables. Basically charts showing results from numerous IPL physicians, what setting they had used, what results they got, different treatment intervals, different skin types etc etc.

These were fantastic and made it easy to compare differing results others had had with different situations and allowed me as the reader to make some of my own assessments as to what settings and techniques I might try for the future and benefit of my own patients.

And this has to be the most enjoyable technical book I have ever read.

Charles

'On the bank of the river he saw a tall tree: from roots to crown one half was aflame and the other green with leaves'

Drawing on myth, folklore and history, the stories of the Mabinogion passed from generations of storytellers before they were written down in the thirteenth century in the form we now read them. Set in dual realms of the forests and valleys of Wales and the shadowy otherworld, the tales are permeated by a dreamlike atmosphere. In 'Math Son of Mathonwy' two brothers plot to carry off the virginal Goewin, while in 'Manawydan Son of Llˆyr' a chieftain roams throughout Britain after a spell is cast over his land. And King Arthur's court provides the backdrop to tales such as 'How Culhwch Won Olwen', in which a young man must complete many tasks before he can marry a giant's daughter, and 'Peredur Son of Evrawg' who strives to prove his valour as a knight.

In his introduction, Jeffrey Gantz discusses the sources, oral tradition and artistry of the tales. This edition includes introductory prefaces to each story, a list for further reading and a note on pronunciation.

Ian Myles Slater on: Beautiful and Puzzling Tales
By Ian M. Slater
The publishing history of this edition, and its relationship to other translations of what is commonly known as "The Mabinogion," is a little complicated, and I think that is worth clearing up, although it may be a little tedious. However, my explanation of it should serve as "buyer's guide" if you are hesitating over exactly what to order.

In 1948 the Golden Cockerel Press issued an "edition-de-luxe" of translations from Medieval Welsh prose tales, made by Gwyn Jones and Thomas Jones, under the title of "The Mabinogion." This was the direct ancestor of the present Everyman volume. The translators, besides sharing a common Welsh name, were both distinguished academics: Thomas Jones was Professor of Welsh at Aberystwyth, and Gwyn Jones was Professor of English at Aberystwyth and Cardiff.

This title of the book was, as the translators pointed out, an erroneous form, a mere scribal error turned into a comprehensive title for stories with quite diverse histories. It was established in the public mind in the nineteenth century by Lady Charlotte Guest, who issued the first complete English translation of the stories, with Welsh texts, published in seven volumes, 1838-1845. The English text and notes of the shorter 1848 edition of her version had been included in the "Everyman's Library" series since 1906. This fat (432 pages) little volume furthered its position with the literary public interested in Welsh matters, general Celtic literature, or Arthurian stories, despite enormous advances in Welsh studies in the intervening century before the Jones and Jones translation. (I have separately reviewed some of its recent editions, with more on the translator's remarkable life.)

A more accurate translation by T.P. Ellis and J. Lloyd, "The Mabinogion: A New Translation," had been published by Oxford University Press in 1929, and seems to have made little impact. (One wonders: did the Depression play a role?) It had some useful annotations, and I have often wondered why it has never been reprinted, while Guest has gone into a variety of fuller or shorter versions (including the stories-only Dover Thrift edition, and one, apparently with the notes, illustrated by Alan Lee) of her bowdlerized and otherwise truncated rendering. Ellis and Lloyd continued to use Guest's title, and omitted one story, "Taliesin," a practice which Jones and Jones followed with no clear explanation. (I will offer one below.)

Otherwise, the narrative contents of all three of these translations are the same. They contain stories in four categories. (Note that preferred spellings of proper names vary, and I have not tried to be fully consistent.)

First, "The Four Branches of the Mabinogi," from which the collective title was derived, consisting of "Pwyll, Prince of Dyved," Branwen Daughter of Llyr," "Manawydan Son of Llyr," and "Math Son of Mathonwy." These begin with a story about the conception and birth of Pwyll's son, Pryderi, whose death is one of the early events in the "Fourth Branch," and concern a variety of heroes, and what are clearly rationalized gods. (Evangeline Walton turned each of the "Four Branches" into a novel; and other writers have done versions of one or another of them.)

Second, there are two "native tales," "The Dream of Maxen Wledig" and "The Story of Lludd and Llevelys," about Roman ("historical") and pre-Roman ("mythical") Britain as imagined by the medieval Welsh. The 'Lludd" text, as we have it, actually belongs to the "Chronicle" tradition launched by Geoffrey of Monmouth's supposed translation from an "ancient British book." (Which, if any part of it ever had any existence, was NOT the "Mabinogion.") "Maxen" seems to reflect an even more garbled version of a story known to Geoffrey, compounding several real people.

Third are two Arthurian stories in native Welsh mode. "Culhwch and Olwen," is an elaborate quest, dragging in, at least by name, most of the gods and heroes traceable in Welsh material, and some of their Irish cousins into the bargain, mostly as part of Arthur's court. "The Dream of Rhonabwy" is a visionary encounter with Arthur and his warriors (and anything else I could say would probably be controversial); a fascinating text, which almost boasts of its authentically dreamlike obscurity.

Fourth are three "Romances," "Owain" (otherwise known as "The Lady of the Fountain"), "Peredur son of Evrawc," and "Gereint the Son of Erbin," the first and last of which are clearly versions of Chretien de Troyes' Old French Arthurian Romances, "Yvain" and "Erec," while the second is related in a more complex manner to his unfinished and problematic "Perceval le Gallois." These seem to illustrate Celtic materials going out into wider European society, and then flowing back into Wales to enrich (and confuse) the native heroic and mythic tradition with ideas of chivalry.

The story missing from these two later translations, as well as a third version from 1976, was published by Charlotte Guest as "The Tale of Taliesin," although it is also found in some manuscripts as two separate tales. Although attested rather late, there are Irish parallels, and its tradition would seem to belong very much with the "native tales" like the "Four Branches of the Mabinogi" and "Culhwch." There seems to have been a real Taliesin, an early medieval poet, to whom much later poems were also attributed, but this story-complex has more to do with the myths about the nature of poetry. (It is also behind Thomas Love Peacock's comic novel, "The Misfortunes of Elphin," and quite a bit of modern fantasy literature.)

Fortunately for those of us who do not read medieval Welsh, Everyman's Library retired the lovely, but unreliable (and textually dubious) Guest translation, replacing it with Jones and Jones in 1949 (J.M. Dent and Sons, Ltd., London, and E.P. Dutton & Co., Inc., New York). This was an inexpensive and readily-available edition, which included a set of textual notes. Confusingly, it kept the old series number (97), which can lead to problems when ordering used copies. It was frequently reprinted, sometimes with emendations including a reissue in 1974 with Supplementary Textual Notes. This preserved the old pagination, which was frequently cited in discussions of the stories, but made it necessary to check the Supplement to be sure of the translators' most recent conclusions. It appeared with more revisions, additions, and a welcome Index of Proper Names in 1989. There were paperback editions (No. 1097) with at least two different covers, one lovely, one, to my mind, merely garish.

Finally, in 1993, with Dent now part of the Orion Publishing Group, and Charles E. Tuttle as the American publisher, it was reset for the Everyman Paperback Classics, with the changes to the translation smoothly incorporated, and the Textual and Supplementary Textual Notes in what seem to be their final forms. Gwyn Jones was still alive to work on these revisions, now with the collaboration of his wife, Mair Jones. The new pagination makes it harder to locate older references to passages; I have held on to my copies of older printings for this reason. Why go flipping through pages when I can look up the reference directly, and then find the corresponding section in a few seconds?

There is also a hardcover edition with a Preface by John Updike, published under the Borzoi imprint in 2001 (not seen). However, as the 1993 / 2001 text is the translator's final, preferred, revision, it is important to know that there is a difference -- especially if you are ordering it used. The 1974 text still had, besides the 44-page introduction, 283 pages. The 1993 edition, and its reprintings, are in a slightly larger format, and have a 32-page introduction, and 240 pages of main text.

Jones-and-Jones is in almost every way superior to the Guest translation, and is readily available; the lack of the "Taliesin" material, and of comparable, but modern, annotations, are its only failings. It has two modern competitors. One is the Penguin Classics "Mabinogion," translated by Jeffrey Gantz. The English of this translation is more modern, and some prefer it. I find Gantz's decisions on spelling some of the Welsh names rather strange; and some students of Welsh think that some of them are hard to justify. Of more importance to most readers will be his decision to give many of the names, particularly in the long lists of champions, their wives, dogs, horses, and swords, in "Culhwch," in the original Welsh. That sounds normal enough, but they are often intended to be understood as nicknames, whose meaning should be transparent, not meaningless, and some are even funny ("Big-bone, daughter of Strength"). Gantz consistently translates them in footnotes, which is highly distracting. In many cases, putting the Welsh text there for those who need it would have kept the main text easier reading, and looking less like the "begats" in "Genesis" and "Numbers.".

The other alternative -- which I would suggest getting as a supplement to either, if not, indeed, as a first choice -- is Patrick K. Ford's "The Mabinogi and Other Medieval Welsh Tales." It drops the French-influence Romances, the enigmatic "Rhonabwy," and "The Dream of Maxen," but gives a clear and vigorous rendering of the Welsh material, with an excellent introduction and notes. Ford not only did away with the persistent "Mabinogion" mistake in the title, he also included "Taliesin," based on the text he had re-edited from manuscripts, and restored to its two-story version, as "The Tale of Gwion Bach" and "The Tale of Taliesin."

It seems that Ellis and Lloyd and Jones and Jones, knew that Charlotte Guest's text for the story (with poems) had passed through the hands of the notorious Iolo Morganwg. He was a pioneering scholar who didn't hesitate to *invent* the evidence to support his theories, and they had preferred not to plunge into that thicket. Nor had anyone else. Unfortunately, the Guest version had been worked over by Robert Graves for his brilliant, and absurd, "The White Goddess," and a reliable version for non-Celticists was more than overdue. Ford's text edition was of value for another reason; there are close parallels between the stories of Gwion and the boyhood of the Irish hero Fionn (Finn McCool), investigation of which certainly needed a proper edition of the Welsh version to work from.

As an added bonus, Ford included as an appendix a translation of the notoriously difficult "Cad Goddeu," or "Battle of the Trees," also found in Guest's notes. It too had been given a splendid, and absurd, interpretation in terms of the Irish Ogham script by Robert Graves, who demonstrated his profound lack of knowledge of Welsh, and equally deep understanding of Irish. (He actually "improved" and re-ordered the translation he was using, without reference to the original....) Ford doesn't claim to understand its "real meaning," if any, only what it actually says, and it is very nice to have it. (By the way, "The Battle of the Trees" seems likely to have been in Tolkien's mind, along with Birnam Wood coming to Dunsinane, when writing of the Siege of Orthanc.)

There is a growing secondary literature about the "Mabinogion" stories, ranging from the excellent but technical, to the trivial, to the seriously erroneous (Graves is not alone!). Gwyn Jones himself contributed an excellent, and readable, analysis of "Culhwch and Olwen," in his book "Kings, Beasts, and Heroes" (1972), where it joins "Beowulf" and "Hrolf Kraki's Saga" (Jones having also translated the latter).

Excellent translation of an under-read classic
By A Customer
Jeffrey Gantz's translation of The Mabinogion is not only the most readable to the modern man, unlike Guest, he doesn't delete passages thought "indelicate" by Victorian society. This is the best representation of these Welsh classics, and includes Gantz's own study of the mythology of these texts, a book in it's own right, as a prologue and at the beginning of each tale. A must for every library.

Modern words for classics from medieval Wales
By wiredweird
Gantz has created a modern, readable translation of these eleven Welsh classics. Although they come from the same oral tradition and were captured on paper around the same time (1200s to 1400s), they are rarely related to each other. Each story has its unique character, like page after page of people named in 'How Culwch won Owen'. 'The Dream of Rohanbwy' likewise seems to be a listing of colored arms and costumes so detailed that the writer say, "no one ... knows The Dream without a book because of the many colors."

Others of these tales are much more interesting for their relatioships to other parts of the mythos of the British isles. 'Peredur son of Evrawg' is variant of the Parsival story, with close parallels in many of its particulars. The Mabingion also retells some of the earliest known tales in the Arthurian canon. 'Gerient and Enid,' for example, is founded in the Arthur mythology. It's founded on the notions of knightly honor and chivalry, but with a primitive and harsh interpretation of the ethos.

There are other glimpses of early Celtic times, as well. One that struck me, in two different passages, was a telling of some great feast, where the doors were closed to all comers once the feasting began. All comers, that is, except a "king of a lawful dominion or a craftsman who brings his craft." Later in that story (Culwch), the bouncer isn't told to let the kings in, only the craftsmen. This is a vivid display of their high regard for skilled work, something that sounds strange to a modern ear. I think less of the modern ear for thinking so little of such skills.

Not all translations of the Mabinogion are created equal. Reading another translation, I foundered on obsolete, Elizabethan language injected to make the stories seem archaic. This one uses contemporary language, as bards in a living oral tradition would have done, to create a smooth and readable collection.

Three Books out of one story does not create loyal customers.
By Ruth C.
I am greatly disappointed that this "book" was merely a few pages of the ending of the story for The Billionaire's First Christmas and the Billionaire's Romance. When you take a story and break it up into three separate books it will not make loyal customers of us. The $2.99 I paid for these few pages of an ending that should have been in the first book was not worth it. I would have bought the Priceless books if I did not believe the author has done the same with those. A loyal customer base is how you will make money not by making three books out of one story. It would be better to write one book and charge a dollar or two more.

In the first decade of the 1800s, John Bell moved his growing family from North Carolina to the Red River community in Robertson County, Tennessee. Bell, who became an elder in the Red River Baptist Church, was well-liked and respected by his neighbors and prospered as a farmer. As Bell worked his farm, a unique phenomenon occurred. Beginning in 1817 and continuing until 1821, John Bell and his family were allegedly “haunted” by a devilish spirit called a “witch” known as “Kate.” The witch’s actions were observed by many in the community, including the clergy. The events subsided only after Bell’s death. Known as the “Red Book,” and including the eyewitness account of Richard Williams Bell, son of John Bell, Ingram’s account is the story of the Bell Witch.

The Real Deal
By Jack Cook
I spent more than twenty years looking for clues as to the actual history behind this Tennessee legend. We continue to keep coming to the same conclusion no matter how far back we trace the history. This is one of the most intriguing and haunting stories in the collection of American ghost legends because of Martin Ingram's insistence that the related events are real history. However, a careful review of family historical documents and the real history of Middle Tennessee and Robertson County reveal that Ingram (and other authors) concocted a story that has continually enthralled readers since its first publication in 1894 in Clarksville, Tennessee. In the best tradition of the liar's club, a thoroughly Victorian tradition of entertainment, the author has used real people and events while weaving his story. Ingram's work has become the primary ghost legend of the state. The original book cover had gold printing on a white cover, and most subsequent printings have been black on red. If you want to determine if your reprint is complete, simply check on page 25 for the "green girl" illustration. Most subsequent reprints of this book have been missing this page because they were reproduced using an incomplete reprint. A careful review has also revealed that all subsequent versions of this legend have been based in part or their entirety on this novel. Many researchers have attempted to discover the original hand-written copy of "Our Family Trouble" (upon which Ingram says his story is based) supposedly written by John Bell's son, Richard Williams Bell. No one has yet come forward with a verifiable copy. The story is very Victorian, somewhat difficult for the modern mind to translate, and full of Old South sentiment, politics, frolic and phrasing. However, many a youngster over the years have missed a night's sleep while combing through its pages, wondering if Old Kate would come in the night, rip the covers from the bed, and twist their hair into knots. This is the original, real deal, though it is not real history. This is the complex story that no Hollywood motion picture or stage play has been able to adequately duplicate.

Struggled with the book
By Mary
I picked this book up because I had heard a discussion on the PRS Podcast and thought I would read a bit more about it. The interest in this copy was it was written by a relative of the Bell Family after many of the family had passed away. While interesting, it just never really caught my attention. It gives you stories based on personal accounts but they seemed so blah. The subject matter is interesting in and of itself and about 1/2 through the book, I felt I had received enough information and stopped reading after struggling through most of what I had read. It is certainly a no nonsense book about the ghost and delivered information readily available through other writtings. I picked it up for free, so I only gained knowledge from it from half the book.

the real thing
By Bruce Mckeeman
If you are up on the Bell Witch phenomenon, well, this is the real deal.
Ingram's historical...and seemingly agreed-upon tale of Red River Tenn's
famed haunting is great. It is admittedly victorian and stiff in delivery,
but it is also far from politically correct, which makes it all the more
stunning. For those not prepared to learn that these folks were slave
owners and rural good-old-boys...buyer beware. But other accounts cannot
have near the Old South review of this awesome story. In fact, I think
the honest delivery makes the literary contribution all the more worth
while. Somewhere between Brer Rabbit, Uncle Remus and the (NOT FACTUAL)
Blair Witch stories. Great reading if you can find one of these out-of-print little gems. McK

Organizations struggle to capture tacit knowledge. Workers struggle to find answers and information across organizational databases and boundaries and silos. New comfort with social sharing, combined with the proliferation of new social tools, offer easy, useful means of sharing not just what we do but how we get things done. For the organization this supports productivity, improves performance, encourages reflective practice, speeds communication, and helps to surface challenges, bottlenecks, and that elusive tacit knowledge. For the worker it illuminates strengths, talents, struggles, and the reality of how days are spent. For the coworker or colleague it solves a problem, saves time, or builds on existing knowledge. And for management it helps to capture who does what, and how, and otherwise makes visible so much of what is presently opaque.

What does showing work mean? It is an image, video, blog post, or use of another tool, or just talking to describe how you solved a problem, show how you fixed the machine, tell how you achieved the workaround, explain how you overcame objections to close the deal, drew the solution to the workflow problem, or photographed the steps you took as you learned to complete a new task. Some of the most effective examples of showing work offer someone explaining how/why they failed, and how they fixed it. Show Your Work offers dozens of examples of individuals and groups showing their work to the benefit of their organizations, their industries, and themselves.

Show Your Work offers dozens of real examples of showing work, supported with tips for how to help it happen, how leaders can lead by showing their own work, and how L&D can extend its reach by showing its own work and helping others show theirs.

“Knowing what gets done is not the same thing as knowing how things get done. Bozarth has cracked the code on breaking down organizational silos and collaborating effectively across time, space, work groups and business cultures. Show Your Work offers new insights on how to derive personal and enterprise value from the processes of sharing, documenting, narrating, describing, linking and connecting the dots on how work actually gets done. It is a wonderfully written, beautifully illustrated thought-provoking exploration of strategies for mastering ‘barely repeatable process’.”

—Beth Kanter, Author, Measuring the Networked Nonprofit

"Jane Bozarth’s new book is a visual breath of fresh air. Gone are stuffy descriptions; instead Jane takes a refreshingly different approach and includes stunning graphics to show how people are freely and willingly sharing their work."

A must have in your professional library
By Susan A. Yeres
What makes an idea great is how many people get to use it and enhance it. Jane Bozarth’s book Show Your Work illustrates this concept beautifully. As an independent consultant I have embraced this notion of always sharing as a way of improving how we get things done, innovating and frankly – being in the world. She illuminates a myriad of options for using networks of communication to share our work. I highly recommend you check out this book – it is instructive, exciting, practical, and fascinating. Everyone who cares about raising the bar for performance, training, outcomes, and practice should order it and read it NOW.

There's awesome...then there's this...
By Shawn Rosler
"Share is the new save"

As simple a concept as it is, this just doesn't seem to stick with people. We, in training and development, kind of had an inside track on this concept, but even we are still learning to embrace it (or, rather, to let go of our work, allowing others to see it). All this said, this book explains, in both great and wonderfully simple detail, Showing and Sharing your work: How this not only can work, but how it can benefit you more than keeping your work in silos or stashed away like some hermit/guru on a mountain that people have to go on a pilgrimage to find (chicken sacrifices not included).

The book itself is easy to follow and, really, a fun read - It's graphically well done and gives the eyes plenty to do (as opposed to the standard black text/white page we've all become begrudgingly accustomed to). But I think one of the greatest aspects of this book, as compared to so many others, is the constant use of case studies and real-life examples. So often, we accept theory as fact and just go with it because it's our occupational dogma, of sorts. Jane provides example after example of not just why SHE thinks we should share, but how others HAVE shared, CONTINUE to share, and BENEFIT from sharing.

Really, there's not enough good I can say about this book...I would recommend it to not just anyone in Training & Development, but anyone. It's a concept we all can benefit from, regardless of profession, craft, or trade. Sharing works, and this book proves it.

Social Media, Crowd Sourcing.. whatever you call it Show Your Work is amazing PD.
By Urbano Delgado
Last August I went to #EdCampWestTexas in Abilene, Texas. An EdCamp, if you haven't been to one, is an unconference -- a free gathering of educators serving the K-12 space. I learned so much about educational technology and learning/teaching strategies in a few hours. The downside was I had to drive around 500 miles round trip to make it happen.

Show Your Work is like a bunch of EdCamps crammed into a paperback book. I actually have both versions: the paperback edition and the Kindle edition. The paperback looks and feels like a softbound coffee table book. It's colorful and looks beautiful. The pleasure comes from opening it and browsing until something catches my eye.

I have to admit that it took me a while, several weeks in fact, to go through the book. This isn't because it's difficult to read. It's not. It's because, for me, the best way to use Show Your Work is like a cookbook. When, in the course of my instructional design or project management work, I need to a fresh perspective on how to approach something -- ideation basically, I browse the book. The watershed #aha moment came when I got to the part about how to make an RSA-like video. You know, it's the video technique where you see a hand holding a pen rapidly sketching whilst a normally-timed narrative guides you. It's on page 66. Teacher Paul Bogush and his students showed me how it's done. It was easy to do. I've made a couple since and even improved on their process so it better fits my workflow.

Why'd I get the Kindle version when I have the paperbound version? Because the Kindle version fits better on my iPad. It's instantly available when I need inspiration.

You really need Show Your Work. It's given me fresh ideas on doing stuff. I'll still go to EdCamps. But the difference will be that I have more to share thanks to having read and used the book.
