I love history and so got the book about the first ladies of the White House. I found the book enjoyable and informative. I often read several books at one time such as a paperback and one or two books on my Kindle. It was a book that I could lay down and read at various intervals. I wish it had had some charts at the end with summaries of such things as the first ladies name, causes, years they were in the White House, education etc.

What a disappointment. This book should have been titled "Eleanor and others" because it focused mostly about Eleanor Roosevelt. Don't waste your money on this book.

Maybe not THE best book on the Civil Rights movement I've ever read, but it's very good. The pieces written by the two women, of their memories of their involvement in the Civil Rights struggle in Selma, are very well done. They really convey what the children experienced.

An excellent first book on FEA

I just received this text and am strongly considering it for an undergraduate course on FEA here at Duke University. It's very well written and concise. Advanced undergraduate students, beginning graduate students, and researchers in industry shouldn't have a problem picking it up and getting up to speed on finite elements quickly.

What's also nice is that this book contains some advanced material on finite strain problems and small-strain plasticity that is difficult to find elsewhere in such an accessible form. There is a much better emphasis here, for example, on the numerical implementation for such problems than what is provided in the text by Bonet and Wood.

First course on FEM

This was the textbook for my first course in the finite element method. It's a pretty good book, but I don't think this would be the best book to buy if you are trying to learn FEM on your own. Even with the help of the instructor, I still had a fairly difficult time grasping some of the concepts. The biggest problem with the book is the paucity of worked examples. The author presents the information on the topic and then moves on to the next topic with very little demonstration of how that knowledge is actually applied. More coverage of the application of the methods would have been very useful.

this book is totally waste of money. i bought it because it was our official textbook but i had never used it. dont understand why my professor choose this book. if u wanna learn FEM, this is not for you.

Essential for Primary Care

I am a primary care NP. I encounter patients who are already on a lot of psych meds and I also prescribe meds for depression, anxiety, etc. I have found this book to be absolutely essential. It covers each drug individually, and covers dosing, side effects, interactions, special populations, etc. in a complete yet concise manner. I recently had a patient who wanted to stop taking Cymbalta, which had been prescribed for fibromyalgia. I needed to quickly know approximately how long a taper I needed to design for her, and the information was in this book, as opposed to the ambiguous language of the manufacturer's prescribing guide.

There is one problem for me, though. I immediately realized that this is a book I want in my office *and* at home. I want it at home -- either in print or digital form -- for those times when I am on call and say, a patient calls on a Saturday with complaints of side effects of one of these medications. Or maybe they want to stop the drug, like my patient on Cymbalta. But when I went to the online website (sorry, Amazon probably won't let me link to it), the publisher wants $195/year for a subscription to Stahl's Essential Psychopharmacology online. While Essential Pharmacology consists of more than just the Prescriber's Guide, I don't really need that. I just want to buy this book. There is no Kindle version of this book, and there is no smartphone app. So I am left to decide whether I want to buy another print version or maybe buy a cheaper print version of an earlier edition. The $195 online access is just way too expensive. The publisher needs to get with the times and offer reasonably-priced digital/online/app versions of this book.

Best "front line" guide to actually prescribing psychiatric drugs

Stahl's book is extremely useful, very helpful for the actual work of deciding which Rx to use, how to use it, and what to be cafeful about. The only drawback to this otherwise really excellent manual, is that the author does not include the anti-parkinsonian drugs that we sometimes use to treat EPS side effects.

Not for beginners to SEM or meta-analysis, but an important supplementary text for advanced meta-analysis

I have a lot of ambivalence about this book; it does a few things really well, and some other things not so well.

First, the good: Cheung's method of three-level meta-analysis via SEM is, in my opinion, brilliant, and the chapter (Chapter 6) describing it, characterizing its advantages over other methods, and providing a walkthrough of how to conduct this type of analysis with his metaSEM package for R, is incredibly well-written. So much so, that I can see this particular chapter becoming a staple in graduate level meta-analysis classes. True, much of the information presented in this chapter is available elsewhere (the metaSEM website, and Cheung's 2014a and 2014b articles, for example). But at least with this book/chapter, 99% of what you need to start doing this analysis is right there. If you are trying to meta-analyze dependent effect sizes (e.g., more than one effect size reported per sample), Cheung's approach is cutting-edge, extremely powerful, and deceptively simple to implement via the metaSEM package.

Where the book mainly flounders, for me, is in some of its earlier chapters that attempt to cover SEM and meta-analysis basics needed to get the most out of the SEM approach to meta-analysis that Cheung advocates for. The book assumes, for example, some SEM experience of its readers, but then covers many of the basic SEM concepts anyways. In doing so, however, the book adopts a heavy-handed algebra approach. The end result is a chapter that feels topically suitable, but overly technical for SEM beginners, while topically underwhelming, yet technically appropriate for seasoned SEM users. If you are new to SEM, I would strongly recommend getting up to speed with a book like Latent Variable Modeling Using R: A Step-by-Step Guide, and then revisiting the SEM approach to meta-analysis. Likewise, I don't think the book could stand on its own as a comprehensive start-to-finish meta-analysis text. Little attention, for example, is paid to the matter of how to search and code literature, meta-analytic reporting standards, conventional visualizations of meta-analytic data (e.g., forest and funnel plots), the matter of publication bias, and the like (though solid references for these topics are provided). Thus, those looking for an introductory text for meta-analysis would probably be better off looking at Introduction to Meta-Analysis or Applied Meta-Analysis for Social Science Research (Methodology in the Social Sciences).

Does that mean that "Meta-Analysis: A Structural Equation Modeling Approach" isn't worth a spot on your statistics bookshelf? Certainly not. If you are familiar with the SEM framework, and the basics of carrying out a meta-analysis, you should strongly consider this book. Dependency of effect sizes is, in my opinion, a highly undervalued problem when conducting a meta-analysis. Cheung's approach described in this book (and the accompanying R package) provides a beautiful solution to this issue, that is surprisingly straightforward to implement and interpret. So if you're into meta-analysis, buy this book. And if you want to get into meta-analysis, consider it for your second or third "advanced/specialized" text on meta-analysis.

About the Author
H. E. Bates was born in 1905 in Northamptonshire. He worked as a journalist and clerk on a local newspaper before publishing his first book, The Two Sisters, when he was twenty. In the next fifteen years he acquired a distinguished reputation for his stories about English country life. During the Second World War he was a Squadron Leader in the R.A.F. The Darling Buds of May, the first of the popular Larkin family novels, was followed by A Breath of French Air (1959), When the Green Woods Laugh (1960), Oh! To Be in England (1963). His works have been translated into sixteen languages. H. E. Bates was awarded the C.B.E. in 1973 and died in January 1974.

Have you ever cried from laughing too hard?

Absurd and hilarious, H.E. Bates introduces you to the strangest family you're ever likely to meet. A tax officer is sent to their house to collect overdue taxes, only to find himself thrown into their somewhat chaotic, but extremely loving and fun life. Set up with the daughter, he throws away his old life to join theirs. Wonderfully written, humorous and kind, one to be read when you're feeling down, or if you're outside enjoying a summer day - best enjoyed with an iced drink and a picnic blanket. H.E. Bates is sure bet for an excellent read - I have read eight novels by Bates now, and have yet to be disppointed.

Fifties British humor

Now a BBC video, the Larkin family rollick through Britain of the '50's. I think you have to be both an Anglophile and addicted to out-of-print British
authors--both of which am I!--to enjoy this. Nothing less like Angela Thirkell can be thought of--these are the adventures of the Lower Class.
And highly enjoyable they are.

You don't know what you're missing

I first read The Darling Buds of May about thirty years ago. Recently BBC added some episodes and turned it into a series starring David Jason, which was acknowledged as the very best of British Comnedy. Incidentally, Catherine Zeta Jones got her big TV break in this series as the beautiful Larkin daughter.
If you get a chance to get hold of a copy of H.E.Bates classic tale of Pop Larkin and his family, you should do so, just for the joy of reading something that is so funny it will split your sides.

About the Author
Dr Elisabeth Parfitt is currently a Honorary Research Fellow at Lancaster University, UK, and has previously been a faculty member of the University of Leeds, UK and the State University of New York at Buffalo in the USA.

Professor Lionel Wilson heads the Planetary Science Research Group in the Environmental Science Department at Lancaster University, UK, where he has worked for the past 37 years, and is a visiting Professor at the University of Hawai’i and Brown University in the USA.

Both have focused their research on the physical processes that control volcanic eruptions.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR

Frederick Nolan, a.k.a. ‘Frederick H. Christian’, was born in Liverpool, England and was educated there and at Aberaeron in Wales. He decided early in life to become a writer, but it was some thirty years before he got around to achieving his ambition. His first book was The Life and Death of John Henry Tunstall, and along the way he became an authority on the history of the American frontier, founder of The English Westerners' Society, and something of a connoisseur of western fiction in the days when it was a flourishing literary genre.

In addition to the Angel westerns, Fred also wrote five entries in the popular ‘Sudden’ series started by Oliver Strange. Among his numerous books is the best-selling The Oshawa Project (published as The Algonquin Project in the US) which was later filmed by MGM as Brass Target, starring Sophia Loren, John Cassavetes, Max von Sydow, George Kennedy, and Robert Vaughn.

A leading authority on the outlaws and gunfighters of the Old West, he has scripted and appeared in many television programs both in England and in the United States, and authored numerous articles in historical and other academic publications. His award-winning books on Southwestern frontier history include The Life and Death of John Henry Tunstall (1965), The Lincoln County War: A Documentary History (a New York Times ‘Book of the Year’ in 1992), Bad Blood: The Life and Times of the Horrell Brothers (1994), The West of Billy the Kid (1998), an annotated edition of Pat Garrett’s Authentic Life of Billy the Kid (2000), and a popular introduction to the history of the frontier, The Wild West: History, Myth and the Making of America, published in 2003.
