Richard Carlson has written numerous books encouraging folks not to "sweat the small stuff", and his title for teens is as warm, wise, and witty as his previous works. His tone is one of an older family friend who manages to advise while still maintaining the minimum level of coolness that teens require from those who intend to guide them into adulthood.

With 100 different chapters, each just a few pages in length, this little book works especially well as a bedside companion or tucked in a backpack for the morning commute to school. Each chapter is devoted to a single, simple idea such as "trust your inner signals" and "root for the underdog," and plenty of real-life examples from teens are used to illustrate principles. In the second chapter, a teen volunteering at an animal shelter is used to show how just one person can make a difference, as she takes the time for one more phone call that results in saving a dog's life. The concepts are appropriate for both early high school students and new graduates--who doesn't need an occasional reminder to "be ok with your bad hair day"? Incorporating sports, theater, literature, video games, teachers, and parents into stories make these examples accessible to kids of all interests, and a sprinkling of tales from the author's own teenage years adds an effective personal note. For Teens and Everyone Else

Every night I sit down with my daughter (11) and son (13) and read. We have read classics, kids stuff, and some current trendy stuff. After reading several other Don't Sweat books I picked this one up to add to my evening reading with the kids.
Perfect selection. It deals with issues that every kid wants to talk about and presents them in a way that every kid will listen to.
My 11 year old comes home often with horror stories about what friend likes her today, what group does what to another group, how one girl hates another girl, and how can she possibly face it all tomorrow.
I counsel her, listen, feedback, and hug her. But she needs to know that what I am telling her is not unique. So when we read the chapters called "Drop the Drama" and "Check Out these Odds! (The Likelihood that Everyone Will Like You) she looked at me like I was a genius. She actually asked me if I knew the author.
Don't get me wrong. This book is great for a wide age range. I read it to my kids. The teen set (and beyond) will devour it.
Some of the issues in this book are so universal that they need to be taught in college or business school. The chapter that is called "Understand the Law of Focus" should be memorized by every student entering college. This chapter reinforces the basic of 'never obsess'. Know anybody that is so focused on one thing that they lose sight of everything else? Better read this part first.
Well written, to the point, and so very very relevant. Good for early grade schoolers to upper teens. It is by far the best Sweat book that I have read.

STRESS REDUCTION FOR TEENS

If you're "stressed out" and would like to look at ways to be a happier more contented person, you may find something in these pages that ring true for you. The book title indicates "for teens", but anyone could benefit from some of the author's suggestions. For example, when someone is talking, avoid the words, "I know."; or "dare to show enthusiam. Be a volunteer in your community-- find something that you really enjoy doing and do it! - Don't infect your friends with negative thoughts if you're in a low mood.-- Instead of making unkind, caustic comments, stay away from those close to you until you feel better; that way, you don't have to feel guilty, make apologies or re-ignite your stress worrying about any inappropriate hurtful words you might have used --Try some meditation or contemplation or yoga exercises to be more relaxed." Richard Carlson's hypothesis is- if you don't get stressed out about the small things, then dealing with more complex issues becomes easier. The book offers advice without lecturing and the topics are brief. One could read a few pages daily. Highly recommended reading. Quite inspirational, and not just for teens. Contains practical information for anyone

We Can All Learn and Benefit From Dr. Carlson's Philosophy !

This is a brand new addition to Dr. Carlson's books on "not sweating the small stuff." This one is targeted to teenagers, but we can all benefit. I found that the way the book is set up is quite helpful. Each of the more than 100 topics is short, and you can gain the insight into his teachings on that topic in just a few pages and a few minutes. There are really practical tips for coping with peer pressure, dealing with everyday situations at school, work, play or home. He includes many examples of his own experiences as a teen and the best ways to handle them. He offers advice, but doesn't preach to you. The advice he presents is simple, full of wisdom for coping with situations the teen must deal with daily. One of his key factors in overcoming the "small stuff" is developing the ability not to be irritated, bothered, and annoyed by the day to day things that happen to all of us. He acknowledges that it's very tough to be a teen today, considering the numerous outside pressures to set you going down the wrong path. The techniques he offers won't make the pressures go away, but you'll be better able to deal with them. He goes into some detail about criticism, and how to handle it. There are tips in gaining self confidence. If you incorporate just a few of his many suggestions into your everyday life it can make a major difference in your life, your success, and those around you. Well worth reading.

About the Author

Lynn M. Shore is Professor of Management at San Diego State University and Co-Director of the Institute for Inclusiveness and Diversity in Organizations. Previously she was on the faculty at Georgia State University and University of California, Irvine. She has been a Visiting Scholar at London School for Economics and Political Science, University of Toulouse, Dauphine University, and The Chinese University of Hong Kong. Dr. Shore has held leadership roles in the Academy of Management, having served as Human Resources Division Chair (2000-2001), on the HR Executive Committee (1995-1998), as Professional Development Workshop Chair for the Diversity and Inclusion Theme Committee (2010-2011), and on the GDO Executive Committee (2011-2014). Her research areas are the employment relationship and work force inclusion and diversity. In the area of employment relationships, she has researched such topics as perceived organizational support, psychological contracts, leader-member exchange, and international aspects of employment relationships. Dr. Shore’s work on inclusion has studied factors that facilitate high-functioning groups, and on diversity has examined the impact that composition of the work group and employee/supervisor dyads has on the attitudes and performance of work groups and individual employees. Her articles have appeared in Academy of Management Journal, Academy of Management Review, Journal of Applied Psychology, Personnel Psychology, and Journal of Management. Dr. Shore is a former Associate Editor of the Journal of Applied Psychology, and serves on the editorial boards of the Journal of Applied Psychology, Journal of Management, and Journal of Organizational Behavior. She is a Fellow of the American Psychological Association and the Society for Industrial and Organizational Psychology.

Jacqueline Coyle-Shapiro is Professor in Organizational Behaviour at the London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE) where she received her PhD in 1996. Prior to joining the LSE, she was a Lecturer at the School of Management, University of Oxford. She has published in such journals as the Academy of Management Journal, Journal of Applied Psychology, Journal of Organizational Behavior and the Journal of Vocational Behavior. She is currently Senior Editor at the Journal of Organizational Behavior and serves on the editorial boards of the Journal of Management, Journal of Applied Behavioral Science and Journal of Managerial Psychology. Jacqueline’s research focuses on studying relationships in organizational settings; their antecedents, mechanisms and consequences. Specifically, her research interests include employee-organization relationship, psychological contracts, perceived organizational support, social exchange theory, organizational justice, organizational citizenship behaviour, and communal relationships. She is also a member of the Innovation Co-creation Lab http://icclab.com where she conducts research on how relationships within groups facilitate or hinder the innovation process. She has been elected to the leadership track of the OB division of the Academy of Management 2011-2015.

Dr. Lois E. Tetrick received her doctorate in Industrial and Organizational Psychology from Georgia Institute of Technology in 1983. Upon completion of her doctoral studies, she joined the faculty of the Department of Psychology at Wayne State University and remained there until 1995 when she moved to the Department of Psychology at the University of Houston. She joined the faculty at George Mason University in 2003 where she is the Director of the Industrial and Organizational Psychology Program.

Professor Tetrick is currently a consulting editor for the Journal of Applied Psychology and is on the editorial boards of the Journal of Organizational Behavior and Management and Organization Review: The Journal of the International Association for Chinese Management Research. She is a former editor of the Journal of Occupational Health Psychology and a former associate editor of the Journal of Applied Psychology. Dr. Tetrick is a co-editor with Jackie Coyle-Shapiro, Lynn Shore, and Susan Taylor of The employment relationship: Examining psychological and contextual perspectives. Recently, she and Jim Quick edited the 2nd edition of the Handbook of Occupational Health Psychology. Dr. Tetrick is a fellow of the American Psychological Association, the Society for Industrial and Organizational Psychology, the American Psychological Society, and the European Academy of Occupational Health Psychology. She has served as President of the Society for Industrial and Organizational Psychology and as Chair of the Human Resources Division of the Academy of Management.

Dr. Tetrick has two areas of research. One area focuses primarily on the employment exchange relationship including psychological contracts and the employee-organization relationship. The other area is occupational health psychology including such topics as safety, occupational stress, and the work-family interface. A common underlying interest in both of these lines of research is incorporating a global perspective in understanding employees’ experiences of the work environment.

Dark Secrets

I enjoyed the mixture of tension and romance which pervades this novel very much. Tessa is a great heroine, struggling to bring up her small daughter alone, and the two brothers she meets...Richard and Russell...both seem likely candidates for her love. However, one has a dark secret, and the story ends with an exciting climax in the creepy, nightime forest. I look forward to reading another story by this writer.

Grade 6–10—In this sequel to Powder Monkey (2005) and Prison Ship (2006, both Bloomsbury), Sam and his friend Richard have a rocky voyage from Australia back to England on a merchant ship. Meanwhile England is at war with France, and the British navy is sending out press gangs to "recruit" sailors. When Sam is in London, he barely escapes a gang and decides to accept Viscount Neville's offer to purchase him a post in the navy as an officer. He is on the same ship as Admiral Lord Nelson and fights with him in the legendary Battle of Trafalgar. Sam's sailing story starts slowly, taking several chapters for the wind to come into the plot sails. Even then, it feels more like a choppy travelogue than an adventure story. One can only wish that Sam mused less about what he should and should not do. Dowswell, however, does give a wealth of historical detail about 19th-century sailing without detracting too much from the plot. The author is at his best describing the Battle of Trafalgar and the funeral of Admiral Lord Nelson, which he based on eyewitness accounts. Fans of the series will be interested in this new segment of Sam's life, and teens interested in sailing stories may be willing to swim through it as well.—Samantha Larsen Hastings, West Jordan Public Library, UT

Young seafarer Sam stood next to Horatio Nelson at the battle of Copenhagen in Powder Monkey (2005), was court-martialed and transported to Australia in Prison Ship (2006), and here comes full circle—returning to England with a pardon to stand near Nelson at Trafalgar, and later to march in Nelson’s funeral. Dowswell surrounds his intrepid narrator with scurvy knaves and loyal friends, tucks in generous measures of well-researched nautical detail, and when battle finally comes, doesn’t stint on the gore. He’s still a little slow getting to the action scenes, but fans of the Hornblower saga or the likes of Michael Molloy’s Peter Raven under Fire (2005) will sail along, happy to see Sam’s fortunes, in love and in war, on the rise. A historical afterword and schematic drawings of HMS Victory and the climactic line of battle are worthwhile additions. Grades 5-8. --John Peters

Paul Dowswell has obviously spent much time in research for this series. Not only was his skill in writing quickly evident, but he also showed even more skill in responsibly giving glimpses of the inhumanity of the era to young and impressionable readers. I enjoyed reading this series with my son and the time we spent talking about the moral issues raised by this series. I strongly suggest to make this series a parentally guided experience.

About the Author
Jacques Herzog and Pierre de Meuron have had nearly parallel careers. They were born in 1950, in Basel, Switzerland, attended the same schools, and formed a partnership in 1978. Recipients of the 2001 Pritzker Architecture Prize, their highest profile project to date is the Tate Modern, for which they transformed the giant Bankside power station in London into a suite of new galleries. They are currently at work on an extension to the Walker Art Center in Minneapolis and the New de Young Museum in San Francisco.

art of H & DeM

H & DeM have always been influenced by art & you can even argue that their body of work could be an entire exhibiton. This book follows up some of their selected projects with interviews of the architects themselves as well as the collaborative artists. It does well to probe into theie unique process of design & actualization of their work. Jaques Herzog says that Art is roughly 20 years ahead of architecture. This vivid book clearly shows the great accomplishments by two men who are constantly trying to even up the odds between art & architecture through inspirations from the natural world.

layers of history, time, artifacts, translated into architecture

I don't think this is an "object book" but a book in which herzog & de meuron want readers to understand their work like an archaelogical history. you cannot flip through it like an photographic architectural essay, but you really have to sit down, have a cup of coffee/tea, and really read the book, think about what they are saying, how other ideas such as art, history, materials, cultural, industrial changes, and etc. are interacting to their architectural process. certainly, they have the depth in their thoughts to publish a book that doesn't depend on photographs/architectural drawings. quite refreshing.

Another object book with content that matches the originality of the design. Herzog & De Meuron, the Basel-based architects, are best known for their art museums, but also for creating buildings that are works of art--even when the program is as mundane as a railroad signal box. This companion to the recent CCA exhibition is an anthology of interviews, stimulating essays by artists and clients, and pictures of objects that have inspired them, in addition to an illustrated catalogue of their 200 buildings and projects. (Michael Webb is the book reviewer for LA Architect magazine.)
