More than just cliches about a broke 20-something.

It would've been so easy to fall into the trap of "I was a broke female writer in Brooklyn working odd jobs to get by. There were *high jinks*!" and leave it at that. Though there certainly are high jinks in this story (I won't spoil them suffice it to say this gets pretty hilarious at times), they're not the central focus of this story.

While this book catalogs one 20-somethings attempt at financial survival in New York City (admittedly a bit of a cliched topic in the post "Girls" era and perhaps even before then), it does so not through a self-centered lens, but through the lens of American capitalist society as a whole. That is to say, Ms. Georgopulos discusses the reasoning behind all her wheelings and dealings -- and then some. She examines how a job can make a person feel worthless (or worth a ton if it's a good job), about the desperation capitalism fills us with, about genuinely needing money as opposed to just desiring it, and about the impacts of privilege.

A lesser writer would've just been like "look at all the wild stuff I did. Isn't that ZANY and JUST ADORKABLE, LIKE ME????" without any deeper commentary or meaning. A bit of a SPOILER but in one chapter, she's working at a McDonald's. The typical 20-something hack would've made working at McDonalds about humorous anecdotes whereas Georgopulos brings up how the teenage manager she hated was probably shouldering too heavy a burden for someone so young — AND she mentions how privileged people exist so far from reality they view working at McDonald's as a punchline and don't understand real people need to work there (or work full-time at two separate McDonald's since they pay so low) in order to live. Then, of course, in other chapters she ties in rape culture and white privilege and other topics. And it NEVER feels forced, heavy-handed, or college freshman-y.

This is definitely a fun read and it's the perfect length for the Kindle Singles format (I read this in an afternoon). If you've been reading Ms. Georgopulos since her Thought Catalog days, pick this up. It's like her best articles on steroids and she's improved so much since then. If you haven't been reading her, pick this up anyway and start. She has this great, unique blend of genuineness, seriousness, and humor that most writers don't possess.

Highlights struggles of lower middle class millenials

I really enjoyed this book, although I was surprised that people describe it as funny. Perhaps growing up on the fringes of the middle class myself, I related too much and the memories it brought up were a bit too sharp for me to see much humor.

What I most liked was her tales of how being on the lower fringe of the middle class affected her mentality. I haven't read much modern literature that talks about being a have-not among the haves, and how that feeling of inadequacy can follow you even once you've "made it." I also empathized with her struggles to find a decent job - despite a degree from a top school, I too have had about 9,000 small jobs to try to make ends meet, and like the author, now that I have one, I am determined to never go back to the horrible feelings of economic uncertainty. So it boils down to I like this book because I can relate to that feeling of needing to ever be clawing my way up.

Georgopulos is a talented writer, and I look forward to seeing her grow even more into her voice.

so great, i want more

So exciting to read a book by a young woman that's about work and finding a place in this world. I loved reading this book. It's so funny and relatable and made me reflect on my teenage years in a totally new way. I didn't want it to end, and when it did, I had to go online and read a bunch of other pieces by the author to keep me going.

Suprisingly great

All Meg Stiles wants is a happy life for her little son Barney and herself. But she knows that her happiness is a fragile little thing. Because her son's father is not her partner Christian but her former lover Johnny Jefferson, and both don't no anything about it. Johnny, a famous rockstar, broke Meg's heart once and she is not willing to give him a second chance, but when he realizes that he has a son everything changes and Meg has to decide how to go on.
How will Meg's future look like and will she give love a second chance?

This is going to be a rather weird review. Because at first I have to tell you why I expected to not love the book and explain the reason why I picked it up.
So far I read "Chasing Daisy and "Johnny be good" (the prequel to "Baby be mine") by Paige Toon and both books were just ok for me. I enjoyed Paige Toon's engaging writing style but I had trouble with the female main character in "Chasing Daisy". I'm just not a big fan of a heroine who has unprotected sex with someone who's in a relationship. I was also not a big fan of Johnny in "Johnny be good" and couldn't understand the adoration he got from other readers. But still I wanted to know what would happen to Meg and Johnny and if they would end up together. I couldn't stop this weird fascination from growing stronger and stronger, so I bought "Baby be mine" when I saw a good deal for it online.

So I started this book with the conviction that it would be an ok book but nothing great. However Paige Toon suprised me with this book. She made Meg and especially Johnny more likable and gave them more depth. I know that many readers had no trouble with these things in "Johnny be good" but for me it was a big issue. At the end of this book I even liked Johnny a little bit and was happy that he was happy. But to be honest I still think that the best thing about Johnny is his huge fortune (and yes, I know that this doesn't sound nice). I also liked Meg more in this book because she was a good mother to Barney and always tried to do what was best for him.

I also enjoyed that Paige Toon changed the characters a bit but not too much, they were still themselves with their countless flaws and issues. The little changes made my reading experience so much better than I expected it to be. The author's writing style was once again very entertaining and made me smile & laugh a lot. I furthermore liked that the author created very interesting and mostly likable secondary characters. Reading about Meg's friends (old and new) was one of my highlights of the book.

I don't want to give away too much about what happens between Meg, Christian and Johnny. However in my opinion there was always only one possible end for this book, so the ending was absolutly no suprise. Some might say that the end was too perfect, too harmonic and too happy but for me it fit to the story. Sometimes overly sweet and mushy happy endings just fit.

Some things in "Baby be mine" were of course over the top and very dramatic, but that's something I expected and that fit to Johnny's life. Maybe I was ok with the drama because I was used to it after reading "Johnny be good".

Because I devoured this book and was very entertained by it I'm even excited for the next book by Paige Toon. I would love to read more about Joseph, who's an upcoming actor and someone Meg meets in Hollywood.

I'm not a big fan of the cover. The woman doesn't fit to how Meg is described and the cover looks generic. I love the covers for the other books by Paige Toon but this one is nothing special.

This book has surprised me a lot and in a very positive way. I devoured it and loved reading about the new developments in Meg, Christian and Johnny's life.

LOVED this follow up

I had been dying to know what happened between Meg and Johnny ever since finishing Johnny Be Good. I even purchased Chasing Daisy, knowing that Toon is famous for giving a little follow up of the characters from the previous book. I was not disappointed at all in this purchase. Love the story and thought it was a wonderful follow up to Johnny. I highly recommend this read to any fan of Toon. I must also say, that even though this is a follow up (and you are totally missing out if you don't read Johnny first), that this novel could technically be a stand alone, you will just be missing so much of the story though.

Loved it!

As you may or may not know I really love Paige Toon's work, I love her addictive style of writing and fun sense of humour that always shines through in her books. I picked this book up on my travels and didn't realise that Johnny Be Good should actually be read first (unfortunately I don't have this book in my `To Read' pile). Usually I wouldn't dream of not reading books in order but I felt like being daring for a change (as daring as this bookworm can get) and I decided to read it anyway.

I'm pleased to say that it didn't matter at all that I hadn't read Johnny Be Good first, this book worked well as a standalone read but now I definitely want to find out exactly what happened in Meg and Johnny's past, although not knowing certainly didn't affect my enjoyment of this book.

The prologue really set the scene and made me want to know more, I was playing out all sorts of scenarios in my head just from this one page so I couldn't wait to get stuck in.

Meg was a very confused character, she didn't seem to know what she really wanted out of life and to be honest she was making a bit of a mess of things. I'm not comfortable with people who lie and lying seemed to be a big part of Meg's life so I did find parts of this book difficult to read.

All of the characters were very likeable, Dana being the only exception, and I loved the descriptions of France and LA because it made me feel like I was there with them (I wish)!

A tragedy marked a significant discovery in the book and from then on everything in Meg's life changed, I felt so sad for all those involved and desperately wanted everything to turn out for the best.

All the scenarios that had played out in my head never happened and I enjoyed the fact that I couldn't figure out what was coming next. The ending was great and left me with a big smile on my face.

This is another hit from Paige Toon, an exciting page-turner that I read in less than a day.

About the Author
J. Alec Motyer (1924–2016) was a renowned Old Testament pastor and scholar. With extensive experience in parish ministry, he was principal of Trinity College in Bristol, England, and was well known as a Bible expositor. His books include The Prophecy of Isaiah, and he was the Old Testament editor of The Bible Speaks Today commentary series.

Well written and conservative. Great balance between pastoral/scholarly commentaries. Moyter definitely has a good head in his shoulders (see his commentary on Isaiah as well).

A beautiful, inspiring commentary

I bought this commentary at the recommendation of my sister-in-law who was working on a series of lectures on Exodus for our church's women's group. Not only is this commentary Biblical and detailed, it's written with such a pastoral sense of people's hearts and high view of the whole of Scripture. This commentary has made the book of Exodus come alive for me in a way it never has before, and my faith and life have been touched deeply by it. I cannot recommend it more highly.

Excellent resource for specific labor market analysis topics

I am a labor economist working with huge amounts of data building complex time series analysis models. One of the more vexing problems to solve is dealing with exogenous impacts on labor market trends. With the change of administration (Obama 2009) there will be significant monetary policy interventions that will have a large impact on the labor market. The Heckman & Robb chapters on evaluating the impact of interventions is an excellent treatment complete enough from me to build from. For that section alone I would give the book a 5.

A touching story!

Allie Wilson is 33 and only weeks from marrying Trey Thompson. While sorting out her belongings one day, she finds an old photograph of the father who left her and her mother when she was four years old. Allie realizes that she doesn't know anything about the man who gave her life, other than that he returned from Vietnam with troubles enough to last a lifetime.

Allie is compelled to search for her father and his history, and does so without telling her mother, and in defiance of her finance's wishes. Her search brings her in contact with those who knew her father and includes the charming Chase Mason, who believes God's hand was in their meeting.

Allie is confused about her motives in searching for her father. She considers that it might be simple curiosity, or perhaps it is God's will. All she knows for sure is that she must follow his trail, no matter the cost. And the cost might be high. She could lose her fiancee and her dreams. But she might find answers and perhaps her faith.

One man, will abandon her and another will guide her, no matter the personal cost because the outcome is after all, really in God's hands.

Her Daddy's Eyes is a poignant story of beginnings, endings, faith, forgiveness and reconciliation. It will touch your heart and you will consider the truth that God's way is the right way.

Wonderful debut novel!

Run to Me is a wonderful debut novel by Aussie transplant Erin Golding, now living in London. It's an unlikely love story between a teacher and a student. Golding does an excellent job handling what might be an uncomfortable topic for some with good taste and strong writing. I love how running brings the story and the forbidden lovers together from their unhappy situations. Abby Fox and Paul Beckett both have good reason to 'run away' when they happen to find each other. The dialogue is particularly good and that propels the reader through the story quite quickly. The ending really makes you think and I liked that a lot. Brava on a job well done! I look forward to this writer's next effort!

An unconventional love story

Set in a small Australian town, Run To Me is an unconventional love story which explores the development of a relationship between thirty something English teacher Abby Fox and seventeen year old high school student Paul Beckett.

It's a challenging subject to write about given that the teacher-student dynamic and age difference are well entrenched social taboo's but I think Golding does a good job of exploring the genuine connection between Abby and Paul, without ignoring the very real issues that stand between them.

I was surprised to find I did sympathise with Abby at times. Golding achieves this by using the first person point of view which reveals Abby's faulty reasoning process, giving it some legitimacy in context. Abby is not a predator, she is conflicted about her attraction to Paul and does make an effort to resist it. Her marriage crisis also highlights her vulnerability and her genuine desire for love. Though none of this entirely excuses her poor choices it does create the necessary space within which the author can explore the complexities of the relationship.

I was impressed by the authenticity of Paul's voice, a mixture of hormone soaked crudity, adolescent confusion and blossoming maturity. His physical attraction to Abby is not unsurprising for a seventeen year old but it's sweet in a way to see that attraction morph into something deeper. I really appreciated the growth of Paul's character not only in terms of his relationship with Abby but also with his father, and his consideration of his future.

There are a few minor errors in the text but on the whole Run To Me is well written, the first person points of view are authentic and the dialogue is natural. The story develops at a good pace and maintains the tension well. The ending is a satisfying fit for both the plot and the characters.

Run to Me is an interesting novel which explores a potentially sensational storyline with compassion and sensitivity. While not everyone will be able comfortable with some elements of the novel, it is an impressive debut from a self published author.

A Great, Thought Provoking Read (It's really a 4.5 star book but Amazon doesn't do half stars!)

Abby Fox is a teacher who is unhappy in her life and ignored by her husband. Paul Beckett is her 17 year old student who is living a miserable existence, made worse by his father's tormenting. Run to Me is the story of how their relationship evolves beyond teacher-student and how Abby's life falls apart because of it.

When I started I didn't think "Run to Me" was going to take the direction it did. I assumed it was maybe an inspiring story of a dedicated teacher helping an underdog student change his life. Similar to an after school special but that is not what I got. As the story progressed and I started to see little cracks in Abby's teacher façade I found myself struggling to "like" her. Little missteps and indiscretions that broke the teacher/student boundaries became more frequent and as I read it I kept thinking "No! No!". I actually said that once or twice out loud! And then they slept together. When I read that part I wanted to hate her but she was still the same unhappy woman from the beginning of the story. She didn't instantly become a villain. I felt for her and could still empathize with her.

As Abby's friends and family find out what has happened she deals with the fall out; Fractured relationships, anger and estrangement.

The author, like Paul in the book, read Wuthering Heights in her final year of high school. "When I came to write my own novel I was inspired by the idea of passion and desire can have such a strong power over us." I loved Wuthering Heights and thought Erin Golding did a beautiful job writing subtle parallels between the two books

This is a tough one for me. Seriously tough! The writing was really good and the story was too. It was the subject matter that really made this book difficult for me. Which is, I believe, the whole point. What I really liked it that it was a departure from the light reads I have been into lately. Run to Me will make you feel a lot of things which is always a wonderful quality in a book, even if the those thing aren't "nice" feelings. And a lot of them aren't nice feelings. I actually spent a lot of time thinking about how if I would be so understanding if the roles were reversed and it was a male teacher and a female student? Does "almost" 18 make it any better?

I hope you will read this book. It's a great read and I think you will really enjoy it. It will definitely push some boundaries, it certainly did for me. And if you are anything like me you will be thinking about it long after you've finished it. I think this would be a great book club selection too because there is so much discuss.

This is Erin Golding's first novel and I am very much looking forward to reading more from her.
