Insight into Southern History offers complexity of Southern Identity

Cobb offers great insight to southern history post-WWII. He covers everything: politics, economics, culture, religion, arts, ideology, internal conflict, hypocrisy, identity, and evolution. At times, his information is unorganized and scattered. He also offers a lot of data without always creating solid context for it; he expects you to figure it out. Most chapters are enjoyable and informative. A few are tedious and take a little effort to get through. As a southern reviewer, it's a great collection of information on the "modern" South, both its contributions to the betterment of the country, as well as its hindrances.

The book came today, it was earlier than expected. The book is in very good condition; no underlining or marking inside. While I have yet to read the book the reviews are excellent. A friend and I will have completed a joint reading of the South beginning with Cash's Mind of the South, picking up recent history with Reconstruction to the present day Hats off to the seller.

Inaccurate information written by unqualified author, caveat emptor.

I've read other material by Michael Valentine Smith (free PDF articles that he's published online) and the information he presents is a mixed bag. Some information is accurate but there also seems to be an equal amount of erroneous data (for the novice psychedelic researcher this will prove frustrating!) Complicating matters further is the lack of evidential references to support his claims. An excellent scientific article written on the topic of psychedelics (with plenty of references but no how-to's to make the drugs) is "Hallucinogens" by David E. Nichols ([...])
If you want to know how to synthesize stuff buy or download (you can find torrents for this) PiHKAL and TiHKAL or check [...]. Best of luck on all future endeavors to all psychonauts around the world :)

A largely irrelevant, outdated "underground" publication...

One of the first and most famous of the "underground" publications dealing with clandestine synthesis of LSD, et al. Largely journal entries that have been copied over verbatim from journal articles. Legal information is extremely outdated and many "recipes" contain dangerous typos a la the Anarchist's Cookbook that will most likely lead to failure of synthesis or death of the chemist if actually attempted.

Text contains several typos that will lead to creating complete poison (at best) or certain death of the chemist (at worst.) The entire "book" consists mainly of articles copied straight out of journal articles. The legal procedures are outdated, the information inaccurate, and generally inapplicable to anyone with more than just a benign curiosity in the subject material.

Wanted, editor...

This was a good book with a good story line. What keeps it from greatness is the editing (or lack thereof). Usually this is a dealbreaker for me. This book is so good that while irritating, the flaws could not keep me from wanting to read the rest of the story. There are misspelled words (or incorrect word choices), words left out, the present tense/past tense of the sentences was bizarre. With all that said, I still loved the characters and the story, and I want to know what happens next!

Editor needed STAT!

Great story premise, good characters...but the writer evidently didn't even check grammar OR word usage during the process. "On slot" does NOT mean the same thing as onslaught. To and too, due and do, bear and bare, where and were and wear...the editing suffered all thru the book, not just at the beginning. One character had a name change spelling in the last 2 chapters. Apostrophes and commas were inserted, or not, where it could make reading continuity hard to achieve. Random words stuck in passages that had nothing to do with the sentence they landed in. This is all stuff a proofreader would have caught.

Good read but needs a better editor

While I did enjoy this book (better than I thought I would) I really think who ever editted this book should be fired. The author had an engaging plot, likabe heroine & hero, a great conflict/resolution but my enjoyment of this book was almost tarnished by the multiple grammar issues, spelling and punctuation that littered this book.

Word usage such as 'your' instead of 'you're', their instead of they're...things of that nature. Sometimes, the only way I knew what the author meant was by content because of a mix-up in the word usage.

I don't wish to distract anyone from purchasing this book because this is a REALLY good read but just keep in mind there are editting issues.

I read this book with the primary aim of gaining a fuller understanding of Naur's background, his involvement with Algol 60 (editing the ALGOL Bulletin and the ALGOL 60 Report and implementing Algol 60 on the DASK and GIER computers) and his later computer science and software engineering work. Parts I and II of this book contained useful material on these subjects. These sections also introduced me to Naur's increasingly negatives views about the work of other computer scientists, as well as philosophers and scientists in other fields. Part III covers Naur's synapse-state theory, which he proposes as the "neural embodiment of mental life". I don't have a background in neuroscience or psychology, so I could not judge these remarks, but his lack of refereed publications in this area is worth noting.

My rating is a compromise between, on the one hand, high respect for Daylight's preparation and patient interviewing technique and, on the other hand, frustration with the harshness of Naur's critiques of other researchers. Others will undoubtedly relish hearing Naur's remarks first-hand and gaining a better understanding of some of the rivalries that existed between the first generation of great computer scientists.
